The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union (EU Reg. n. 2016/679) entered into effect on 24 May 2016 for the protection of personal data of EU citizens, including when processed by extra-EU operators. It is directly applicable in all EU Member States since 25 May 2018. Although the provisions are new, they form part of a series of legislative acts issued in compliance with the Directive 95/46/EC.
